When you are born just about everything is taken care of for you. Your only responsibilities are figuring out how your body works (which actually seems like a lot)
You get older and you want to help your parents and take on responsibilities because you see your role models doing things all day. It is thrilling being given a task to complete all by yourself.
With a fun list of things you are in charge of you eagerly complete your tasks. Slowly the magic wears off. You HAVE to do them, you don’t GET to do them anymore. But the list grows.
Suddenly you are a busy teenager with what feels like so much on your plate. The list is huge! College or finding a career looming in the not so distant future. Things start to get overwhelming, but usually most of your big ticket responsibilities are figured out or even taken care of for you. Housing, utilities doctor’s appointments.
Then all of a sudden school is over and you and the rest of adulting falls in your lap. The list is impossible.
You let things slide while you try to figure out what you are doing with your life, get a job, buy a house, and before you can catch up you are considered an adult. Adulting is expected of you.
I feel like it is a life long struggle to get adulting figured out. The list is getting longer every day. People are always going to judge you on what you decided to put on the back burner while you figured out some other piece that “You should have figured out by now.”
All we can do is try, learn from each other, and enjoy the ride.
